PARTICIPANTS AND GUARDIANS

Short History – Jeffrey Cohen

After selling my accounting practice in 2002 I eventually moved to Thailand in 2006 and started a guesthouse, restaurant and bar with my new Thai wife. In 2015 we shifted to Australia for the children’s education.

I couldn’t get employed because I was too old, so we commenced supporting in our house 24/7, an 18 year old lad with autism, bipolar, non-verbal and eating disorders, for 3 1/2 years. When he was taken from us with only 1/2 hours notice we did some disability support until I was employed as an accountant by a provider.

I left after 7 months with a feeling that many providers, plan managers and support coordinators were not giving the care required by the NDIS to Participants or support staff. They were only in it for themselves.

I set up Your Supported Living Pty Ltd in April 2023 and obtained our full NDIS registration in May 2024.

Philosophy

Our commitment is empowering people with disabilities to enjoy life on their terms by granting them more freedom, choice, control and by assisting them in realising their objectives.

They can have NDIS supported and coordinated or private home care services for the disabled or infirmed. It can be for mentally or physically affected persons and includes personal, domestic or outside-the-home help.

100% FOR THE PARTICIPANT

the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission (NDIS Commission).
Under the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, registered providers must meet the NDIS Practice Standards. Both registered and unregistered providers must adhere to the NDIS Code of Conduct.

Participants/Guardians
You might like to think about these questions to decide if a support is right for you. You can also look at provider wait lists and your first meeting with a provider to help you. You don’t have to get answers for all these questions.
Find out more about your disability and/ or functionality. You can look at the Guides for understanding supports, the research and evaluation page on the NDIS website, and a list of peak bodies and other disability associations to get you started.
What providers have you found who offer supports that are likely to meet your needs? What types of supports do they offer?
Why do you think this support will help you? What needs or goals do you think it will meet?
Are there other supports you have considered that may be right for you? Have you tried something like this before? If yes, what was the outcome? What does your doctor or occupational therapist suggest?
Where is this support available? Can you get this support closer to home? How much does this support cost?
Does your NDIS plan include funding for this support? Check the reasonable and necessary criteria and whether we would fund it
What do other people who have seen this provider or tried this support think? What benefits did they get? (Note – supports don’t work the same way for everyone)
Tip sheet – finding new providers or supports
You can do research to understand what providers are available, and the types of supports they offer. This will help you make decisions about the types of supports you would like to use.
You can talk with your early childhood partner, local area coordinator or NDIS planner, or support coordinator if you have one. You can use Provider Finder. You can look at local advertisements.
You can find information on the internet – providers often have a website. Some search results may not be what you are looking for. You can ask someone you trust to help you, like your doctor or a family member or friend.
