Receiving your NDIS plan is a big step towards getting the support you need.

But if it feels like the funding you’re allocated doesn’t cover everything you need, it can be really frustrating. If you’re thinking, “My NDIS funding isn’t enough,” there are steps you can take. At Your Supported Living, we’re here to help you explore your options.

Understanding Why Funding Might Seem Insufficient

Sometimes the initial plan doesn’t fully reflect the complexity of your needs or your goals.

Or, if your situation has changed since your last assessment, you might need more support. Understanding why your funding is set this way is the first step in finding a solution.

Your Options for Seeking More Funding

1. Request a Plan Variation: If you have smaller or more urgent needs that were not included in your initial plan, you can ask for a plan variation. This means contacting your Local Area Coordinator and providing them with evidence to support the extra help you need. This option is often used for specific needs that are short-term or require small changes to existing supports.

2. Request a Plan Reassessment: If you feel the funding is much lower than what you need, or if it doesn’t properly reflect your situation, you can request a full reassessment. This involves a more thorough review of your needs, which might include new reports from professionals involved in your care. This is an opportunity to present updated evidence for a reassessment of your funding needs.

Strong evidence is required, and increased funding is not guaranteed.

3. Gather Strong Evidence: No matter which route you choose, having strong evidence is very important. This could include:

  • Updated assessments and reports from therapists, doctors, and other professionals that clearly explain your needs and required support.
  • Detailed goal statements that explain your goals and how the extra funding will help you reach them.
  • Daily living needs assessments that give a clear picture of the support level you need for everyday tasks.
  • Impact statements that show how not having enough funding affects your well-being and ability to take part in activities.

4. Seek Support Coordination: If your plan includes support coordination, your support coordinator can help a lot. They will assist with collecting your evidence, understanding the NDIS process, and supporting you during NDIS-related meetings with planners or the NDIA. If you don’t have a support coordinator, our team can help.

5. Understand Your Right to Appeal NDIS Decisions: If your request for a variation or reassessment is not approved, you have the right to appeal. Your Supported Living will provide you with details about their review process. If you’re not satisfied with that, you can take your appeal further to the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART)P: 6. Advocate for Your Needs: Don’t hesitate to speak up for the support you need. Be clear and calm when explaining your situation, provide your evidence, and emphasize how the extra funding will help you achieve your goals and live a more inclusive life.
